It was great to be part of the international team of teachers ready for the innovation. I had the pleasure to be talking about how to start with technology and gave some considerations for BYOD implementation at schools/ language schools and other institutions. My talk was a bit too short for me, as usual but it was great to be there and inspire some. Here I would like to share with all attendees and not only my presentation slides as well as the outputs from the session. Feel free to comment and discuss, or just simply reach out to me.
We had some good inputs from the discussion on SAMR and below you can fine some inputs from the session.
Finally it was great to be a part of the whole conference and I hope that the day gave lots of thought provoking ideas to all. Many thanks ELT Jam, well done!

Educators have always been trying to find a way to help the learners in the educational process. Going back to the 5th century Greece, they started with a simple but efficient way to enhance calculation – an abacus. But that was long before the technological revolution and the introduction of personal computers.
Back in 1950’s the first Computer Based Training programmes were invented initially for the aviation industry. These programmes were simple and gave the learners the opportunity to access some documents in an electronic form. That was sufficient enough to support traditional delivery and the trend started to evolve slowly till 90’s. With the rise in the accessibility to PCs more and more educational institutions as well as corporate organisations started to adapt CBT and take it on board. The notion of training with an electronic device as opposed to the student was there but not fully explored. Every year groups of analytics focus on new trends in elearning and draft the approaches that can affect the education. There are two main sources of this information: Horizon Report andGartmer Hype Cycle. Both of them publish each year reports are published annually and can serve as a basis for planning in education and not only. In the last two years two trends were mentioned in the reports: mLearning and BYOD. This is what I wanted to comment upon in this entry. What is mlearning? Have a go at the video below. Wikipedia defines mLearning as follows: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-learning The term m-learning or "mobile learning", has different meanings for different communities, covering a range of use scenarios including e-learning, educational technology and distance education, that focuses on learning with mobile devices. Useful in ELT? Yes it can be linked with BYOD ( Bring Your Own Device) approach. It can be highly beneficial but must be planned correctly. Below you will find a video done on BYOD /BYOT showing the differences between the two. The video also mentions SAMR Model on which you will find some more information in the next post. SAMR model can help you start to integrate technology into your lesson plans There are many websites on SAMR model and Kathy's Schrock's blog sheds some light on it. http://www.schrockguide.net/samr.html |
How to Start? Here you will find my short blogs on how to start with ICT in TESOL. You will also learn what is out there with regards to mLearning. Archives
